Khalipa’s NC Fit is a perfect example of why rebranding is a good idea if you want to expand your brand into new markets. They’ve continued to grow CrossFit methodology and get more people learning about health and fitness, while spreading that message around the globe under their own brand separate from NorCal CF. The guy has gyms in Asia, couldn’t have done that while being NorCal..

Though the relatively cozy, deliciously grimy joint looks fairly modest from the outside, the Queen West establishment (which was founded in 1947) has hosted its fair share of historic shows, including a 1997 preview of the Rolling Stones’ No Security tour and a notorious semi secret gig in ’01 that helped introduce NYC buzz act the Strokes to the world. The Dead Weather show was another addition to that list of legendary concerts that make you want to have grandkids so you can regale them with fantastic tales of your rock ‘n’ roll glory days. No surprise, since the band’s got an impeccable pedigree: in addition to White, the Dead Weather features singer Alison Mosshart, who fronts raw garagey outfit the Kills, Dean Fertita (of heavy rock maulers Queens Of The Stone Age) and bassist Jack Lawrence, who also plays in White’s other side project, the countryish garage act the Raconteurs. After an opening set from exuberantly poppy Montrealers Hollerado, the Dead Weather showcased the visceral, blues inflected songs from their forthcoming Horehound album (out July 13), to a club jam packed with fans.
