Being outnumbered 3 1 the Athenians were mounted themselves on the hills behind the plain to give them an advantage in a Persian attack. For 4 days the 2 armies were locked in a stalemate and neither provoked or attacked the other. The Persian commander, Datis was running low on supplies for his army so he decided to attempt to send half of his force directly to Athens while the rest of his army kept the Greeks troops waiting for the remainder of Persian forces to attack them.
